Arkansas Storm Season, Every Year

Spring is the main event. From March into June, Arkansas gets the supercell thunderstorms that drop hail and push straight-line wind through neighborhoods. The March 31, 2023 tornado was rated EF3 with peak winds of 165 mph and tracked just over 34 miles from west Little Rock through North Little Rock, Sherwood and Jacksonville before weakening near Cabot. On June 14, 2023, hail up to softball size, four inches across, hit the south side of Hot Springs and communities around Lake Hamilton, Royal and Crystal Springs in Garland County.

Then comes summer, with heat that bakes shingles and pop-up storms that bring more wind. Winter brings the occasional ice storm that loads limbs and brings them down on roofs. There is no quiet season for an Arkansas roof.

How to Tell If Your Roof Has Storm Damage

Hail. Look at the soft metals first. Dented gutters, downspouts, roof vents and window screens are the easiest hail evidence to spot from the ground. On the shingles, hail leaves round bruises where the granules are knocked off, often with a soft spot underneath. Big hail can crack the mat. Wind. Creased shingles that were lifted and folded back, shingles missing entirely, and broken seal strips that you cannot see from the ground but that let the next storm do more damage.

Tornado and debris. Punctures, torn-off sections, and impact damage from limbs and flying debris. This kind of damage is usually obvious, but the roof next door that looks fine often has creased shingles and lifted flashing too.

Please do not climb your own roof after a storm. Call us. We inspect for free and photograph everything.

What to Do Right After a Storm

The Arkansas Insurance Department publishes post-storm tips for homeowners, and they line up with what we tell our own customers:

• Have the roof inspected by a trusted roofing contractor.
• Contact your insurance company or agent as soon as possible.
• Take photos or video of the damage before anything is cleaned up.
• Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, like tarping a hole, and save every receipt.
• Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance company has inspected and approved the estimate.
• Verify any contractor's license or registration with the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board, get a signed contract with no blank spaces, and walk away from anyone who offers to waive your deductible.

We can put a tarp on an active leak the same day in many cases, and we photograph the damage before we cover it so nothing is lost for the claim.

Storm Restoration, Start to Finish

Free inspection and documentation. We walk every slope, check the soft metals, and photograph what we find. You get the photos.

You open the claim. If the damage warrants it, you call your insurance company. We do not file claims for homeowners, but we will be on the phone with you if you want.

Adjuster meeting. We meet the adjuster at your house and walk the roof with them so nothing gets overlooked.

Scope review. Once the claim is approved, we go through the scope with you line by line and explain your deductible and how recoverable depreciation works.

The work. Roof, gutters, downspouts, vents, and whatever else was approved. If the scope missed items, we document them and submit a supplement.

Not Every Storm Roof Needs Replacing

Sometimes we find a handful of wind-lifted shingles and nothing else. That is a repair, not a claim, and we will tell you that. Our roof repair page covers those jobs. When damage is widespread, a full roof replacement is usually what the insurer approves.

How soon after a storm should I get an inspection?
Within a few days if you can. Damage that is not documented promptly is harder to tie to a specific storm, and policies have time limits for filing.

My neighbor got a new roof from hail. Does that mean I have damage?
Maybe. Hail is streaky and two houses on the same street can fare very differently. The only way to know is an inspection.

Will filing a claim raise my rates?
That is a question for your agent. Weather claims are treated differently from other claims by many carriers, but every company is different.

Can you tarp my roof today?

Do you do gutters and siding too?
