The IKO shingles we install

IKO Cambridge is the everyday architectural shingle. IKO describes it as providing all the beauty of natural textured materials without the upkeep. It has a fiberglass core, FastLock bonding that helps prevent shingle lift, a Class 3 impact resistance rating against hail, and a standard 110 mph limited wind warranty that can be upgraded to 130 mph with the high wind application. Cambridge colors include Dual Black, Weatherwood, Charcoal Grey, Driftwood, Dual Grey, Dual Brown, Earthtone Cedar, Harvard Slate, Beachwood, and Dove White. Weatherwood and Dual Black are the two we install most in Central Arkansas.

IKO Dynasty is the step-up performance shingle. Its main feature is a wider ArmourZone nailing surface, a tear-resistant woven strip that gives the installer a bigger target and holds the nail better in wind. Dynasty carries a 130 mph limited wind warranty as standard and a Class 3 impact rating. Colors include Olde Style Weatherwood, Granite Black, Cornerstone, Atlantic Blue, Glacier, Shadow Brown, Summit Grey, Frostone Grey, Driftshake, Brownstone, and Sentinel Slate, among others.

For hail, IKO Nordic is the one to look at. Nordic is reinforced with polymer-modified asphalt for flexibility and tear resistance, carries the UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance rating, the highest possible, keeps the ArmourZone nailing surface, and has the 130 mph limited wind warranty. Nordic comes in a tighter color range: Olde Style Weatherwood, Granite Black, Shadow Brown, Summit Grey, Glacier, and Driftshake.

What the IKO warranty actually covers

Cambridge, Dynasty, and Nordic all carry IKO's Limited Lifetime warranty, which IKO defines as the period the original owner keeps the home after installation. Each has a limited wind warranty, 110 mph standard on Cambridge and 130 mph on Dynasty and Nordic, and each has a 10 year limited algae resistance warranty against blue-green algae. That 10 year algae term is shorter than GAF or CertainTeed, which is worth knowing if your roof has shaded slopes.

Now the plain-language part. A manufacturer warranty covers defects in the shingle. It does not cover a hailstorm in April, wind damage from a spring squall line, or the kind of destruction the March 31, 2023 tornado did across Little Rock. How IKO fits Arkansas weather

Hail. Cambridge and Dynasty are Class 3, which handles small hail fine but is not the top rating. If hail took your last roof, IKO Nordic with its Class 4 rating is the product to price, and it is often one of the most affordable Class 4 shingles available in Arkansas. Check with your insurance agent about a Class 4 premium discount.

Wind. The 130 mph limited wind warranty on Dynasty and Nordic, combined with the wide ArmourZone strip, is a real advantage for open lots around Cabot, Conway, and the Delta side of Jonesboro where straight-line winds have a clean run at the roof. Cambridge can reach 130 mph with the high wind application, which uses extra nails and IKO accessories.

Heat and humidity. Nordic's polymer-modified asphalt is designed to flex through heat expansion instead of cracking. On any IKO roof, balanced attic ventilation is what keeps the shingles from aging early under an Arkansas summer sun.

Algae. The 10 year algae warranty is the shortest of the brands we carry. In practice IKO shingles streak about like anything else in humid Arkansas, but if streaking is a big concern, compare the terms on the other four brands below.

Here is where IKO lands. GAF Timberline HDZ has the widest nail zone and a no-maximum wind warranty when the full GAF accessory set is used, with UHDZ as the Class 4 option. Owens Corning Duration has the SureNail strip and a 130 mph wind warranty, with Duration FLEX at Class 4. CertainTeed Landmark is heavier with a 25 year algae warranty and a Class 4 ClimateFlex version. TAMKO Heritage and Titan XT are made in Joplin, Missouri, with 160 mph wind coverage on Titan XT. IKO's case is straightforward: comparable wind ratings, a good nail zone on Dynasty and Nordic, and a price that is usually a notch below the big two. On a tight insurance budget or a rental property, IKO is often the sensible answer.

What Rumble does on an IKO install

Same process as every roof we build. Full tear-off to the deck, never a layover. Replace rotted or soft decking. Ice and water shield in valleys, along eaves, and around chimneys, vents, and pipe boots, then synthetic underlayment over the rest. Shingles nailed in the ArmourZone or the Cambridge nail line with the correct count for the wind warranty, matching IKO starter and hip and ridge when the high wind application calls for it, and a check that intake and exhaust ventilation are balanced. We sweep the yard with rolling magnets, then register your warranty with IKO and give you the paperwork. Is IKO a cheap shingle?
