How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Arkansas

To choose a roofing contractor in Arkansas, verify that they are registered as a roofing contractor with the Residential Contractors Committee of the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board, which requires a surety bond of at least $15,000 and proof of workers' compensation coverage. Then confirm they carry general liability insurance, get a written, itemized estimate, get more than one bid, check recent local reviews and references, and walk away from anyone who pressures you to sign today or offers to waive your deductible. Those steps screen out most of the bad actors before you spend a dollar.

Rumble Roofing is Arkansas owned and operated, based in Little Rock and serving Central and Northeast Arkansas. We would rather you compare us against a checklist than take our word for it, so here is the checklist.

1. Verify Arkansas Registration and Licensing

Arkansas Code 17-25-601 and following requires anyone who engages in or solicits residential roofing services for a fee, including construction, installation, repair, maintenance, and waterproofing, to hold a roofing contractor registration certificate. The application requires a surety bond in the minimum amount of $15,000 and proof of workers' compensation coverage. Out-of-state roofers must also designate a registered agent in Arkansas. Arkansas does not issue a roofing license; registration is the credential to ask for. Commercial work of $50,000 or more requires a separate commercial license from the Contractors Licensing Board.

You can check any contractor yourself. The Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing hosts a "Find a Licensed Contractor" search on its Contractors Licensing Board pages. Look the company up by name before you sign anything. The Arkansas Insurance Department tells storm victims to do exactly this. Our own registration and insurance details are on our credentials page.

2. Confirm Insurance, Not Just a Promise

Ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers' compensation, and call the agent listed on it to confirm it is current. If a worker is hurt on your roof and the company has no workers' comp, you can end up in the middle of it. If a crew damages your neighbor's property and there is no liability coverage, same story.

3. Get a Written, Itemized Estimate

A real estimate names the shingle brand and product line, underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, starter, ventilation, the number of layers being removed, a per-sheet price for decking replacement, permits, disposal, cleanup, the payment schedule, the workmanship warranty, and the manufacturer warranty. If an estimate is one line and one number, you cannot compare it to anything. Our article on what a new roof costs in Arkansas explains each of those line items.

4. Get More Than One Bid

The Arkansas Attorney General's post-storm consumer alert says it plainly: get more than one estimate, demand references and check them, and never let a contractor pressure you into hiring them. Two or three bids will tell you quickly which one left things out and which one is padded.

5. Read the Contract Before You Sign

Never sign a contract with blanks to be filled in later, and always keep a copy. Both the Attorney General and the Insurance Department repeat this warning because it is the most common way homeowners get hurt. Watch for contingency agreements that lock you in to one contractor before your insurance claim is even approved, and read any assignment language carefully. Arkansas law gives you the right to cancel a home solicitation sale within three days, which applies to a lot of door-knock roofing contracts, according to the Attorney General's office.

6. Check the Payment Terms

The Attorney General says never pay a contractor in full until the work is finished, and the Insurance Department says do not pay up front. A modest deposit for materials is normal on a retail job. A demand for most of the money before a shingle is delivered is not. On insurance jobs, the normal flow is your deductible plus the first insurance check when the job is scheduled or completed, and the recoverable depreciation check after the final invoice goes to your carrier.

7. Confirm They Are Actually Local

A local office, a local phone number, and a history in the area matter because roofs need warranty service years later. Storm-chasing crews from out of state follow hail tracks into Arkansas, do a season of work, and leave. When the roof leaks in year three, the number is disconnected. Our article on Arkansas storm chaser roofers covers how to spot them. Rumble Roofing's office is at 10220 W Markham St in Little Rock, and our Northeast Arkansas work runs out of Jonesboro.

8. Look at Reviews and Ask for Local References

Read recent Google reviews, and look for detail rather than star counts. Ask for two or three addresses in your area where the company installed a roof at least a couple of years ago, and drive by. Rumble Roofing holds a 4.8 star Google rating, and you can read what customers say on our reviews page.

9. Ask What They Install and Why

A good contractor can explain the difference between 3-tab, architectural, and impact-resistant shingles, and why one fits your house and budget. We install shingles from Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed, IKO, and TAMKO, and we will tell you the tradeoffs between them rather than push one line.

10. Know the Red Flags

  • Offers to waive, absorb, or "cover" your deductible. The Arkansas Insurance Department warns against this. It is insurance fraud, and Rumble Roofing will not do it.
  • Pressure to sign the same day, or a "price good only today."
  • A crew that shows up unsolicited after a storm and finds damage on every roof on the street.
  • Telling you not to call your insurance company, or offering to handle the whole claim so you never talk to your adjuster.
  • No physical Arkansas address, out-of-state plates, or a company name that changed last year.
  • Cash-only deals or a large up-front payment.
  • Vague warranty language with nothing in writing.
